About
Matt Ruby was born and raised in the small town of Hopkinton, New Hampshire. He grew up running through the woods, building tree-houses and shooting guns. He doesn’t do any of that anymore, but he still has a love for New Hampshire and its residents. Live Free or Die. Matt attended Plymouth State University where he was a resident of the Blue Lodge. After four years of college and without receiving a diploma, Matt journeyed to Portland, Oregon, in search of endless winters and in the footsteps of friends. After a year and a half in Oregon he traveled back to the East Coast, where he spent time in New York and New Jersey constructing dinosaur exhibits for the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. He now resides in Brooklyn, New York and is attending Parsons working towards his MFA in Design and Technology.
Artist Statement
My work is influenced by the systems and structure of the world around me. From architecture and utilities, to language and typography, I draw influence from many areas of life and culture. Converting two-dimensional spaces into simplified environments is something I strive for in my work. My background in art and design as well as construction and fabrication gave me a wide variety of skills and perspectives to draw from.
Tangibility and weight are things that I look for in design. Building and fabrication has given me a foundation for thinking and working in spatial and structural forms. The structure of type and language is a big influence on my work.
Simplicity is very important to my work. I try to make work that is interesting and dynamic, but has the fewest number of parts. Minimalism without the superiority complex.
